How to Choose The Best Breast Pump for Low Supply
Choosing a breast pump to help increase your milk supply is a personal decision. Different pumps are better suited to better people! All of the pumps on this list can be used to increase supply, but some have extra features that make them helpful for different things. For example if you are a working mom you might like a breast pump that is portable. Below we’ve listed some of the important things to think about when you are choosing a breast pump to suit your needs.
Types of Electric Breast Pumps
Do you need the best breast pump for increasing milk supply? You can choose from electric and manual breast pumps to increase milk supply.
Difference between Electric and Manual Breast Pumps
Electric pumps are operated using battery or wall power, while manual pumps require hand operation. Most manual pumps use a level to increase suction. Which can mean that the suction is not consistent or strong enough for increasing low milk supply. If you are interested in a manual breast pump, check out our article best manual breast pump for low milk supply.
Double Electric Breast Pumps
Double electric pumps feature two flanges so that you can pump both breasts at the same time. A double electric breast pump might be best for you if you are seriously committed to increasing your breast milk supply quickly. By using a double pump you are able to encourage your body to product more milk in a shorter period of time. Most double electric pumps can easily be converted to single use for when you want to just pump the opposite side while breastfeeding your baby.
- The most efficient type of pump
- Use with a pumping bra to make it hands free
- Comfortable to use
Single Electric Breast Pumps
A single electric pump has one pump head. They cost less than double pumps. A single electric pump may be the best pump for you if you are planning to only pump on one side at a time or if you are looking for the most affordable price.
- Most affordable type of electric breast pump
Wearable Breast Pumps
The best breast pump for you might be a wearable breast pump. These pumps sit in your nursing bra and are held in place by suction. They’re handy because they’re much smaller and quieter than other pumps, and can be used discreetly while you are working or going about your daily tasks.
- Usually USB powered
- Better for smaller breasts
- Bluetooth app compatible
Features of breast pumps
Here are some of the most important features to consider when purchasing a breast pump for low breast milk supply.
Hospital Grade Breast Pumps
Many moms who are trying to increase milk supply will opt for a hospital grade breast pump. These are the top of the line breast pumps and rival those used in hospitals. While hospital grade is not a defined term, it usually means that the pump has a strong motor which can be used for long periods of time and is a hygenic closed system pump.
Closed System Pumps
Some electric pumps are called closed system pumps. This means that
Motor
One of the most important things to consider when buying a pump for increasing milk supply is the motor strength and endurance. This is because you will likely want to pump multiple times a day while you are increasing your supply. Choosing a strong and durable motor is important – you don’t want to overload your motor and damage your pump!
Power Source
Things such as a built in rechargeable battery, or carry handles will make your pump better for traveling or taking to work. On the other hand, some have USB chargers or only wall adapters which will need to remain plugged in while pumping.
Weight and Portability
Some breast pumps come with added features that make them more portable than others. The ability to move your pump around is going to be affected by its weight, and some can weigh upwards of 2lbs. If you want to move around, it’s a good idea to choose one that is lightweight and portable.
Settings
When choosing a pump to increase milk supply, you’ll want to consider how adjustable the suction and strength are. Some breast pumps have just a couple of preset settings to choose from, while the best will have multiple modes and settings that are fully adjustable. The benefit of this is that you will be able to find the settings that work for you, and that are comfortable for you. This could be different on different days! I recommend keeping an eye out for devices that are fully adjustable and have modes which mimic natural breastfeeding – these tend to help you to express more milk than with simpler models.

Quick tips for increasing low milk supply
Keep your baby at your breast
The very most important thing to do when trying to increase your breast milk supply is to keep breastfeeding your baby. Breast milk production relies on supply and demand. The more milk your baby takes from you, the more milk you will supply. This looks different for every breastfeeding mom, but offering your baby to feed at least 8 times a day is a minimum. When I was increasing my supply, I offered 8 times PLUS offered a feed 20 minutes after my baby had finished.
How to pump for low milk supply
If you are exclusively breastfeeding, it can be challenging finding the time to pump extra milk to push up that milk supply. You can add extra pumping time in by using a single electric pump (or your double electric on its single pump setting) to pump the opposite side at the same time as you are breastfeeding your baby.
Another way to approach pumping for low milk supply is with power pumping. With power pumping you are aiming to use the pump to mimic your baby cluster feeding. A typical power pumping session would include pumping for 5 minutes on, 10 minutes off and repeating this 5-6 times.
Make sure you’re eating enough
It’s really easy to forget to look after yourself when you have a newborn. Try to ensure you are getting enough water and healthy foods during this time.
Relax
It’s easier said than done when you are struggling with low supply! Taking the time to relax while breastfeeding is important to helping you make more breast milk. You might like to try meditation, visualisation or even just relaxing and watching Netflix.
Try a supply line
A baby is always more efficient at removing milk than a breast pump, so why not try giving them extra milk by using a supply line? A supply line sits at your nipple and gives the supplementary milk through a thin tube. This way, you are getting extra stimulation for your breasts, which will further increase your supply. Luckily, you can find a nursing supply line on Amazon. Click here to see the Medela supplemental nursing system on Amazon.
